Non-motorized area on the South Branch of the AuSable River. 15 miles east of Grayling. Ranging in length from 2 7/10 mi. to 11 3/10 mi. Recommended to ski or hike with a buddy... some sections of this trail are a considerable distance from the nearest plowed road. Very scenic, remote, quiet area! Near Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground.

The Michigan Forest Visitor Center is open daily 10am to 6pm Memorial Day through Labor Day. September through May, the center is open daily 9am to 4pm, excluding the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The Hartwick Pines Logging Museum is open May 1 through Oct. 31. Within the visitor center is a 105-seat auditorium featuring a nine-projector, multi-image slide program: "The Forest, Michigan's Renewable Resource." This 14-minute show orients visitors to the story of forest management from the logging era to the present. The auditorium also hosts a variety of programs, videos and special presentations during the summer.

A federally owned special area designed for the protection and restoration of the population of threatened loons and eagles. Vegetation varies from tag alder and conifer swamps to upland jack pine, white pine and oak. Fishing is catch and release only to maintain food supply for loons. Walk-in access and camping. With an extensive network of trails, it is a scenic, non-motorized area. Hiking, biking & ungroomed cross-country ski trails range in length from 4 1/2 miles to 7 miles. Loon nesting area closed to public from March 1 to July 1.
